Extensive Dry Rot Repairs Needed Throughout Heritage Building
Prokil is currently working on a big heritage project at a Bournemouth church to completely remove extensive dry rot and repair the damage.
The five-man team started work at the beginning of July 2025 and the estimated completion date is early August – approximately a four-week timeframe.
Complete Contaminated Timber Removal
All contaminated timber and flooring have been ripped out and need replacing with new wood and materials. If not done properly, the dry rot will continue to consume the building.
It is critical that all traces of dry rot are systematically removed to prevent the dry rot from returning and spreading again.

Navigating Challenges
Fester, Prokil’s lead damp proofer and heritage roofer on site, said the “main challenge has been clearing the dry rot and making sure the flooring is immaculately clean.”
He added: “The substrate needs to be cleaned thoroughly, and special cleaning products are used to kill the dry rot.
“It must be cleaned spotlessly with no spores left.”

Dry Rot Penetrated Brickwork & Cement
Fester explained that the spread of the dry rot had been so extensive that it had penetrated the Bournemouth church’s brickwork and cement layers. The Prokil team had to employ special techniques to ensure the dry rot was eradicated from the brickwork and cement. If not done correctly, the dry rot would simply come back and compromise the church’s structural integrity.
The walls had to be separately treated with a different technique and sealed.
Due to the extensive dry rot damage, the ceiling between the ground floor and basement requires removal and replacement – something which Prokil is equipped to complete. There was significant black mould in the basement that our team will have to remove and ensure the space becomes safe again for people to use.
